Graphics for Textile
To celebrate 75 years of Indian independence, the Abheraj Baldota Foundation saluted India through ‘Sutr Santati’, a textiles exhibition representing 75 traditional Indian textiles specifically designed to foster and strengthen the Indian pride using traditional techniques and indigenous natural yarns. Project Brief: Create one of a kind textile ( scarf, stole, dupatta, wall art) using the traditional techniques with a feel of Indianness and nationalism. The project aimed at giving a global appeal to this craft without changing its traditonal design vocabulary and using indigenous raw materials. I made a 250/120m gota patti shawl piece titled, “Elements of Heritage” on the theme of, “Vasudev Katumbakam”

Technique - Gota Patti
Gota patti was only worn by royal families in the earlier times, but it has become much more commonplace today. This can be credited to the switch from gold and silver to gilt and lurex, as well as mass production of gota by electrically powered swivel looms.

Final Design
It is reminiscent of the festive Diwali celebration in Jaipur where the Kachhawa clan of Jaipur royalty wear black or blue on Diwali. The traditional motifs and techniques of Gota Patti, the iconic Hawamahal, flora, fauna and architectural elements of Jaipur have been consciously put together in a contemporary geometric layout juxtaposing the traditional and contemporary- that Jaipur stands for- a true spirit of Vasudev Kutumbakam.
